Using a pastry blender or a fork, cut in the shortening or lard until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly add the boiling water, a little at a time, stirring until the dough comes together and can be shaped into a ball.<\/p>\n<p>For Flat Dumplings:<br \/>\nLightly flour a clean surface and roll out the dough to about \u215b inch thickness.<\/p>\n<p>Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the dough into strips, then into squares. Set aside.<\/p>\n<p>For Drop Dumplings:<br \/>\nSkip the rolling\u2014just pinch off small pieces of dough in your desired size for a rustic drop-dumpling style.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cook the Dumplings:<br \/>\nBring your soup, broth, or fruit mixture to a gentle boil. Drop in a few dumplings at a time to prevent sticking. Cover the pot with a lid and let them cook undisturbed for a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Continue adding more dumplings in batches.<\/p>\n<p>Once all the dumplings are in, reduce the heat to a simmer.
